The City of Southfield took ownership of the Northland Center mall property in December 2015 for $2.4 million. The 114-acre property is under control of the City of Southfield; the property is located in the Downtown Development District. Together they are fielding interest from developers and investors from across the country on the property.
Upon determination of a Master Site Plan, portions of or all the existing structure may be demolished for new development. The goal is for the City and Southfield DDA to identify developers for mixed-use development.
A project steering committee has been established by the City of Southfield and the Southfield DDA to oversee planning on the former Northland mall property. This committee includes Southfield DDA Executive Director Al Aceves, Southfield City Council members, leading city administrators, and Southfield DDA board members.
The nation’s first regional shopping mall, Northland first opened in 1954 and in 1957 became one of the first enclosed shopping mall complexes in the United States.
